Sobre seus sistemas

Stallman: “Once GNU is written, everyone will be able to obtain good system software free, just like air.”

Linus: “I’m doing a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won’t be big and professional like gnu) for 386(486) AT clones.”

Comentário:

- Linux é um dos maiores players do mercado em termos de servidor. Está indo bem (apesar da distância do líder) também nos desktops.

- GNU/Hurd quem?

Sobre o reconhecimento público de suas obras:

Stallman: “Giving the Linus Torvalds Award to the Free Software Foundation is a bit like giving the Han Solo Award to the Rebel Alliance”

Linus: “I’m basically a very lazy person who likes to get credit for things other people actually do.”

Sobre software proprietário junto com software livre:

Stallman: “Today many people are switching to free software for purely practical reasons. That is good, as far as it goes, but that isn’t all we need to do! Attracting users to free software is not the whole job, just the first step.”

Linus: “Really, I’m not out to destroy Microsoft. That will just be a completely unintentional side effect.”

Sobre o objetivo de suas viagens:

Stallman: “If in my lifetime the problem of non-free software is solved, I could perhaps relax and write software again. But I might instead try to help deal with the world’s larger problems. Standing up to an evil system is exhilarating, and now I have a taste for it.”

Linus: “If you want to travel around the world and be invited to speak at a lot of different places, just write a Unix operating system.”

Sobre suas motivações em relação ao Software Livre:

Stallman: “I could have made money this way, and perhaps amused myself writing code. But I knew that at the end of my career, I would look back on years of building walls to divide people, and feel I had spent my life making the world a worse place.”

Linus: “Software is like sex; it’s better when it’s free.”
